The iPhone Photo Post

This blogger has been SLACKING, y'all. I can't believe it's been a week since my last post! That's ridiculous! I'm sure you're probably all really tired of hearing this from everyone lately, but this girl's been busy. I've been going and going all day and into the not wee anymore hours of the morning. I have seen the sun rise more than a couple of times this past week.

The baby is getting his back teeth/molars and they STINK. They take forever to come in, they make him cranky as heck, and they messed up our sleep routine. All of a sudden this kid wants to wake up at three in morning and play after he gets over his initial anger at the world. Luckily he is not one of those kids that wakes up at 6 am no matter what, so we've been sleeping in REALLY late to make up for those nights. This is both a blessing and a curse, because now I don't know how much of this messed up schedule is teething related and how much is "we slept until almost 2 today" related.

One of the things I've been working on is fabric related. I can't really say what it is because it may or may not be a gift for someone who may or may not read this blog, but my husband and I scoured several places one night in search of the perfect fabrics. This is what we have so far:

I've also been knitting a lot here in the evenings. I'm finally to the point where I can do it while watching tv, which is awesome. My motto for December this year is A-B-C. A - Always, B - Be, C- Crafting. Always be crafting, always be crafting. Being able to keep my hands busy while in the car or getting caught up on the tv shows we do watch is extremely beneficial.

I've finished up a couple more December Daily books. I have not yet made my own, but I do have all the papers picked out at least. I was going to put up the tree on the first, so that would be the first day in my book, but then I managed to convince the apartment manager that our carpet was tragic past the point of redemption, so they're going to replace it next week. I am excited for new carpet, but dreading having to pack up all the furniture and books from there and find places to stash them until it's done. We have a lot of stuff bolted to the walls in here!!!

Bubba has a newfound love for my craft room too. He loves to play with all my tools (or at least, the safer ones he's allowed to touch) and it's not at all uncommon to find him during the day doing this:

I have this plastic step stool in there next to the table and he likes to stand up there and either watch me while I work, or go in while I'm in the living room and just color on scraps of paper I leave out for him. It's pretty dang cute, I'm not gonna lie!

It's finally starting to get cold-ish around here, which means that we have to bust out the warm stuff like flannel jammies:

socks:

and knit hats...

that cause uncontrollable hat hair!

I put puff paint on the bottom of a few pairs of the socks in hopes that it would make them less slippery on the kitchen floor. Yes, yet another one of my craft projects! It did not really work though. I'm going to have to suck it up this weekend and buy him some new walker shoes and remind myself that at least I don't have multiples and only have to buy one pair!

Speaking of hair...

one of the other things on our "To Do" list this weekend is to take the Bubs for his first haircut. It's growing longer than the rest on the sides of the top area and in the back, near the bottom. This makes for a very interesting mullet, to say the least. Also, he tends to sweat when he falls asleep and if he sleeps in the carseat, this causes those long side pieces to get crimped in a sticking out sort of way that resembles tiny wings on the sides of his head. Plenty funny, but not so cute.

We just want to get it evened out so the rest of his hair has a chance to catch up.

Finally, I leave you with this:

Technically it doesn't fit in with my iPhone photos, but I just had to post it or I would never get around to it! Bubba's actually been taking steps here and there since the 16th of October, just a few days shy of his first birthday. He would take one or two here or there, but I didn't really count that as "walking," just taking steps. I don't want to be one of those moms who overexaggerates her child's milestones, but I still want to give the kid credit where credit is due!

(sidenote - random pet peeve: moms who are all like, MY kid says 10 words. No, your kid makes ten sounds that you can interpret. When your kid is actually talking, then EVERYONE will understand, not just you.)

Finally, on November 10th, he all of a sudden decided to just go for it and took about eight steps to walk across from the TV to me in front of the couch! I was so excited! Now he's constantly toddling about the apartment, always with his arms up for balance. He sort of looks like a really really cute but drunk baby orangutan! HA! It's been nearly impossible to get a video though, because the second he sees the camera he gets really excited, falls, then speed crawls over so he can play with it. I think I shot about ten videos on the day I got this one before I got one I could use.

The best part about him walking is that now he picks up stuff like books and brings them over to me so we can play together. I know... heart melting, right? MAN I sure do like this baby!

He's on his way!

Tonight, while I was decorating cookies for the birthday party on Saturday, Bubba took his first step. It was just one, to be sure, but he did it all by himself, with no coaxing or coaching from us. Unfortunately, since I was at the kitchen table, I missed it, but his daddy saw the whole thing.

I am recording it here, for posterity's sake, that at 1:18 in the morning, our son began his journey of a thousand miles. :)

***postscript***

YES, I know he's up late. Even for him. He slept until 1 pm today and then took a two hour nap, so I'm not terribly worried about it. I'd rather him be up late when I'm up and alert than up early when I'm a stupid zombie because I'm just not a morning person.

Potty Training with my Eleven Month Old

...also known as OMG you are freaking CRAZY!!!

(Disclaimer - this one is gonna be long, folks. It will also probably not be interesting to you unless you have a baby or are about to have a baby. Don't say I didn't warn you!!!)

I know. I know what people think when I say that I bought the baby potty chairs (yup, one in each bathroom!) and that I've started the whole process. They think he's not old enough. They think that he can't even WALK yet, how do I expect him to have control over his lower body to potty train? They think that it's way too early. They think I may be pushing him too hard, too early. They think it's unrealistic. But above all, they think it's a little bit insane.

Why do I know this? Simple. I know this because I totally used to think that way about it!

My friend Danea had her first baby a little over a year before I had mine. When he turned eight months old, she celebrated by buying him a potty chair. I scoffed. I snorted. I laughed out loud. That crazy Canadian, I told myself. You can't potty train a BABY!!!

Now, here I am with an eleven month old that I've been sitting on the potty for almost a month now. Consider my words eaten.

Our official first day was September eighth.

It all started because I've been reading up on Montessori. I learned about it a little from one of the teachers at the first school I worked in as an aide. I really liked the idea of empowering children to be able to do thing themselves, and to teach accountability. I think that's something that is sorely lacking in today's society.

Anyway, one of the things they cover is potty training. Their methods are VERY different from traditional potty training in this country. For starters - no diapers or pull ups. EVER. Also, no rewards, no bribes, no stickers, no targets in the bowl, etc. Peeing and pooping are a part of life, and you don't get rewards for doing it as an adult, therefore it's unrealistic to teach children they deserve them for doing the same thing. Also, you don't ask the child if they want to go potty - you tell them - "It's time to go potty." This means you're sitting them on the pot at the same times every day, specifically when they first get up, and after meals. Think about it. When do YOU have to go?

Some people go a little bit further, and practice something called Elimination Communication. This is where you pay attention to your baby's cues and learn when they are about to go, and then you put them on the pot. Ideally, this is started when your baby is just DAYS old. This means that regular potty chairs are too big, of course, so you end up using a little bowl.

Right.

That's a little bit far out there for me. More power to the folks who do it, but one non negotiable in my eyes is the ability to reliably sit upright - you know, like you would on a potty chair? I don't think I'd be trying this with a baby without that ability.

One book that kept coming up time and time again as I was reading various websites, books, and blogs was this one:

I went ahead and checked it out from the library. It's a pretty thin book, and a very interesting read. A lot of what I just wrote about is in there. It also talks about why we potty train the way we do, how we USED to potty train (interesting), and why you should start earlier. I'm going to give you the gist of it.

For starters, in this country we usually don't start potty training until after a kid is two years old. I say "in this country" because, like my Canadian friend told me, in other countries its more common for kids to be finished training by that age than to be starting. Part of it is out of necessity, part of it is because they spend more time at home and can devote the energy to that pursuit, and part of it is because we Americans luuurrrrrrvvvvee our experts.

There was this doctor, in the 50s or 60s who came out and said that people were potty training all wrong. He came up with a bunch of psychological reasons why we should wait to do this. You know how when you go to a bookstore, there are like a million books on how to get your kid to sleep? They're a dime a dozen. Well, this guy was sort of like those doctors - just another expert with his own theory and his own research to back it up.

The thing was, there was no one else telling us what to do. His theories gained credence. Imagine for a minute that Dr. Ferber was the only person to write a baby sleep book, and that's all there was as guidance. Imagine he was THE expert - there was no one else. Imagine that his way became the ONLY way, and if you did things differently, while, you'd just be wrong.

That's sort of what happened.

The author of the book does a pretty good job of stating which of his ideas were true, and which were crap, and why. It's interesting stuff. It's also not necessary to read, because the book is set up so you can skip to the important stuff. She acknowledges in the introduction that moms are busy and she understands if they can't read the whole thing because they don't have time!

I read the whole thing, because that's the kind of anal retentive, OCD-having person I am. I read owner's manuals too.

Don't judge.

There are now two of these little numbers in our apartment:

This is the Baby Bjorn Little Potty. Again, in website after website and book after book, this one was recommended because of it's simple design, no frills approach, and baby appropriate size. It's all one piece, so it's easy to clean. The baby can sit on it and have both feet flat on the floor. (apparently this is important to be able to poop - who knew?) It's small enough that you can take it with you if you need to be away from home for a while.

We got one in blue and one in green. There's a reason for this. Children are smart, but can be easily redirected. It's just important not to plant a thought into their head, and to try to see what the more important thought is. For example, if you say "It's time to potty" and the baby says "NO I don't want to potty", your first instinct may be to argue or explain it out. You'll say "But you need to go potty" or "just sit on the potty for a minute" but all you're doing is reminding them of the thing they do not want to do (go potty) and you're telling them what they HAVE to do, which sets up a situation where it's a battle of wills.

So, what you CAN say in this instance is "Would you like to use the Green or the Blue potty?" and now, the baby has a CHOICE. This is really important because little kids LOVE to make choices, they love to feel in control, and they love the cause and effect of it all - as in, I Made This Happen. get it?

Oh, those child psychologists are so sneaky!

That of course leads me to another reason to start early - while babies can't, toddlers will argue with you. They will resist lots of things, but especially change. You try toting a new potty chair into the home of a kid that's spent his entire two years on Earth pooping in a diaper, and tell him he needs to go in it now. I don't have to tell you what will happen, because you already know. You know because your friends with older kids have told you. You know because you laugh at parenting cartoons about it. You know because you dread the day it will happen to you.

That kid isn't going to want to have anything to do with this new thing.

You'll threaten, you'll beg, you'll plead, you'll bribe. On some, it may work. On most, they'll hold out because that's what toddlers do. They say no and act stubborn! LOL!

Initially, I was buying the potties just to have them in the house. I wanted them to be something that Bubba was used to seeing, not ever something new and scary. After they were here though, and I did some more reading, I decided to start using them. At first, I just sat him on there after he would wake up. I mean, I know where I head first thing in the morning! Then, I started to put him on there after meals. I want this to be routine - wake up, go potty. Eat, go potty, wash hands. This is going to sound kind of bad, but it reminds me a lot of housebreaking a puppy. I know. I can just SEE the hate mail. (Luckily, I turned off anonymous posting a while back. Take THAT Internet meanies!)

Here's the crazy part - it's working. He sits on the chair. He looks at books or plays with a straw. He chatters with us and giggles and grins. Best of all - HE GOES IN THE CHAIR!!! Talk about a cheap thrill/total mom pride moment the first time he peed on that thing. It all got repeated the first time he pooped too. Does he have any idea what he's doing? Probably not. Do we celebrate like that every time? No. Does he go every time? No.

Here's what it is now - a part of our routine. Little kids THRIVE on routine. You get up, you sit on the potty. If you go - good job for going. If you don't - good job for sitting on the potty anyway. Either way, it's just not a big deal. It's just another necessary fact of life. Everyone does it. Since it's something that we've always done (as far as he'll be able to remember), that whole "something new and scary" thing never gets factored into the equation. At least, this is the theory I'm working on here. :)

I guess you can say I'm doing a modified Elimination Communication. If I see him and he's obviously about to go (all of us parents know our baby's "Poop Face") I'll take him and sit him on the chair too. Sometimes we make it, sometimes we don't. I'll tell you what though - we're using a LOT less baby wipes these days! My husband is totally on board. We've got a chair stashed at his Godparent's house for Football Sundays. We're doing really well with sticking to our routine, and he's doing really well with how he's adapted to it. I'm not expecting him to be "trained" in the traditional sense of the word any time soon. I'm okay with that. I'm just trying to be on the path of least resistance here.

But that whole putting him in teeny cotton underpants ONLY all day? I think I'll wait a bit on that one. This IS a rental, after all.

Eleven Months

Let the countdown to Bubba's first birthday begin!

Holy hell, folks. I can't believe this baby is almost a year old already. That's insane.

He's getting so big! He also has a definite personality now - he's very quiet and observant when in a new situation, until he has a chance to assess things, and then once he's confident he knows what is going on, he gets totally into it. He's got a pretty good sense of humor and is very silly. He "talks" all the time - to toys, to the dogs, to himself, to us. He's constantly trying to figure out how to access things and accomplish new feats, and he doesn't give up easily.

He can climb on the couch, he managed to climb on the coffee table (and then promptly slipped, bumped his chin, and bit his tongue) and he can even stand on his own for almost a minute.

He's still a really good eater and will eat almost anything we feed him. More and more he gets samplings from what we have for meals along with his own food. It doesn't matter how much he's had though, or how recently - if he sees you eating, he WILL be by your side in a matter of seconds to beg with the dogs.

He's getting longer, but staying skinny! We have pants that he outgrew in length before he ever managed to fit in the waist. As a result, he wears a lot of pants and shorts that are constantly falling down. We call him our skinny butt baby. :)

We have not gone back to the bottle and so I gave away our nice glass ones. It's all sippy cups, straws, and regular drinking glasses from here on out. We use shot glasses for him because they're just the right size for a baby. He still wants nothing to do with holding his own cup or spoon though. Occasionally, he'll go over to the table where his cup is sitting and bend down so he can take a drink, but he won't pick up the cup.

Stupid Blogger turning my pictures sideways!!! I think he's channeling Robin Williams in this one.

He still LOVES to blow raspberries and make weird mouth noises.

He's also really into pointing at stuff. His favorite things at which to point are ceiling fans and light fixtures. Here he's pointing at the wrist strap for my camera.

He loves to play with magazines, shoes, and drinking straws. Hammering things or using his rhythm sticks to pound on the furniture or floors is also a popular pastime.

The big new thing that we started doing this month was working on potty training. I know it sounds insane to be potty training a baby that is under a year and can't walk yet, because I thought my friend who was doing it with her kid was insane for doing it! (I just chalked it up to her being Canadian, ha ha! Luv ya Big D) I've been doing some reading and research though, and I'm a believer now... so far. There will definitely be a post about this in the next week or so.

His monthly examination of Uglydoll's face.

I really really really wish this one had been in focus. BLAH stupid low light.

What this child looks like a lot of the time these days. Except not sideways. Can I get a "Stupid Blogger"???

He also spent a lot of time crawling over to me, pulling himself up, and trying to snatch the camera out of my hand. Yeah, I don't think so, buddy boy!

Suh-LAH-Kerr!

That's me. Just call me Miss Slacker, as that is apparently what I am these days. I can't believe it's already been a week since my last post. I guess I haven't really been doing anything very interesting. Let's see - I did Bubba's ten month photo shoot, but I need to post the photos still. I'll try to get it done here in the next few days. Little man has also learned some big new skills in the past week. Some, I'm very excited about:

(drinking from a straw!!! YAY!!!)

And some that I'm decidedly NOT excited about:

(climbing. BOO)

(yes, those are all magazines to which I subscribe. That's not even all of them. Hooray for free magazine subscriptions!)

Yesterday I picked up some pretty fabric and got to work making bias strips for binding with this nifty little doohickey:

SO MUCH EASIER than doing it by hand with the sewing gauge, can I tell you? I want to get the two inch one that I saw at the fabric store so I can make them for quilts too. Awesome. All that bias tape is going to be on the edges of this fabric:

I'm making cloth napkins! Just one more step in our journey toward green living. Yes, I know it would have been more frugal and more truly green to use thrifted or repurposed fabric, but honestly, the idea of wiping my mouth with fabric that was once near some stranger's rear end (used sheets get suggested a lot as inexpensive fabric) kinda gives me the heebie jeebies. Ick-ola dude. So new fabric it is. I love how funky it is and I'm now having fantasies of having theme napkins for EVERY holiday. Fun!

Tonight we took Bubba out for Chinese. He did really well.

We cut up a bunch of lo mein noodles for him (almost a half cup) and he ate almost all of them with very little ending up on the floor. Can I tell you how cool it is to go out for dinner as a family and all three of us be able to eat the same thing? Didn't bring a sippy cup? No worries, pass him his very own cup with a straw! I love that this child is a good eater so far and will eat most of what we offer him. Of course, we're being careful with no nuts or eggs or honey, but within reason, he has been getting to sample what we have. Recent favorites are lunch meat, cheese, and Ritz crackers.

Breakfasts have been so much easier too. Before, I would spoon feed him 4 ounces of plain whole milk yogurt with 4-6 ounces of pureed fruit mixed in. It was kind of messy and took a while. Now, I add a couple of ounces of juice to that mixture, so it thins out a bit, and give it to him in a glass with a straw. It's a baby smoothie! Awesome!

He went to the pediatrician for a weight follow up last Friday. He gained a half pound in the last month, which is good. We've really been working on fattening the boy up! He's been switched to the higher calorie toddler formula, he's getting real butter (not margarine) mixed into his veggies, we've given him a lot more avocadoes lately, there was the introduction of Ritz crackers to take the place of some of the Baby Mum Mums he was eating because they were more caloric... it's hard work! I wish someone would tell me to go gain weight, sheesh! Now he has to have a bottle of Pedia Sure a day, and not only is this stuff stinky as all get out, it's not cheap either. Ah well. He's worth it! :)

Bubba Crawled!!!

Today we attended a potluck with one of our playgroups. Most of the other moms and babies had left and a few of us were hanging out chatting when I noticed that my son, who had just moments before been in the middle of the rug, was now at the edge of the rug! I said hey look - he's moving! One of the other moms asked me when he had started to crawl. I was like, um, about thirty seconds ago?

She laughed and said I bet if we take his overalls off (gosh I'm a sucker for little kids in overalls!) he will just go. So, we peeled them off and set him back in the middle of the rug. Luckily, I am rarely found without my camera in my bag, so I was able to catch video of him trying to get over to the ball.

It's not the most stylish or coordinated crawl, but it's a crawl, dang it! Bubba is now mobile!!!

So Close!

This kid is ready to CRAWL!!!

He turns eight months old tomorrow. He's been getting up on his hands and knees and rocking for a while now, but today, while we were playing on the floor, I noticed him do something new - he picked up a hand and moved it forward. Right now, one of his very favorite things in the world are cell phones, so I put mine on the ring tone selector so it wouldn't shut off and therefore lose his interest. I laid it a few feet in front of him, grabbed my camera, and prayed. My patience was rewarded!

So it wasn't an actual FULL crawl, but he's moving forward, and he's moving his hands and knees to do so, which is a start, right? He'll be moving full speed here soon, I'm sure.

(The replacement for Big Red arrived today - that's why the box is in the background. I killed the motor making bread two weeks ago and the nice folks at KitchenAid replaced it for me. )

Pulling Up

Earlier this week, Bubba was sitting in his crib while I showered. When I got out, I saw him lean forward and grab the railing. He didn't really do much beyond that, but since he's been pulling himself up on my hands for a while now, I knew it was only a matter of time.

We needed to lower the mattress.

Well of course, with us being us, we totally put it off/forgot about it. Then, Friday night, we got a new mattress for our bed. My old mattress was one of those $98 each piece Sleep America specials and was over ten years old. The middle was completely saggy and it was thin and uncomfortable. It was also only a FULL, because I bought it for myself in my first apartment. Yeah, that means we've been squeezing myself, my husband, the baby, and two dogs on a double bed. Crazy.

When my former boss offered me her guest room mattress that was less than two years old because she wanted to switch to a sofa sleeper, I did not hesitate! It is a pillow top and almost a foot higher than the old bed. This means little dogs can no longer get up into it. Best part - it is a QUEEN! We have room to SPRAWL, hahaha! We got a friend to help us out with getting it and hauled that bad boy home.

It sat in the living room overnight, because we needed to go buy sheets in the new bigger size. In the morning, we put the baby in his crib (which is in our room, thankfully!) so we could swap out the mattresses. As we were dragging the new one into the room, I hear my husband shout "HEY! What are you doing???" I'm thinking, duh, I'm moving a mattress, when I look over toward the crib.

Dang if that baby wasn't standing up in his crib with a big ol' grin on his face!!! That mattress was dropped with a quickness so I could grab the camera. As per our usual MO, we waved it around to see if we could get him to do it again.

He didn't pull himself all the way up again, because he slid forward too far, but as you can see, he made the best of the situation. When I set the camera down and pulled him away from there, he was covered with teeny white flakes of paint. Time to buy one of those rail guards!

It's kind of weird because now, in the space of one day, our bed is way higher and the baby's bed is way lower. Before they were about the same height. I slept on it last night for the first time, and it's pretty dang comfy. Hooray for a grown up bed!

Hello, carbs!

Bubba is pleased to make your aquaintance!

I was trying to decide what Bubba's next new food was going to be when I came across
this. My Baby center emails had said that I could start feeding him small finger foods and slightly chunkier purees, but truth be told, I'm kind of scared. I gave him a small piece of mushy banana once and he started gagging on it and making choking sounds until I stuck my finger in his mouth and pulled it out.

Scary.

Anyway, the website said that I could start mixing small pasta into his purees, so when I found this pastina, I was excited. It's perfect. It's tiny, like couscous, and cooks in a very similar way. We gave him a little mixed with acorn squash and carrots and he seemed to enjoy it.

Hooray for new foods!

It's a sign!

Since before I had the baby, I knew I wanted to teach the baby some sign language. I've read that babies can sign way before they can speak, and it helps to reduce toddler meltowns a bit because it gives them an extra tool to communicate, thereby reducing the frustration which is the cause of most toddler meltdowns.

Unfortunately, we're kind of scatterbrained around here, and we haven't been really consistent with teaching the baby any signs. I do it when I remember, but mostly it's been "mom," "dad," and "milk." Yeah, I suck.

Or at least, I thought I did.

Wednesday afternoon, after I gave Bubba his lunch, I brought out his bottle and asked him if he wanted some milk, while doing the sign for milk. He got all excited when he saw it, like he usually does. He kind of does this screamy grunt and gets really agitated and reaches out for it. I noticed that he was opening and closing his fist on one hand, but very loosely. My husband was working from home that day, and I commented that it sort of looked like he was signing "milk" but we decided that we really couldn't be sure.

Today, we had playgroup. When we got home, I sat Bubba in his chair so I could fix him some lunch. When I came out into the living room holding his bowls of food, he got really excited, and then I saw it - that little hand in the air, opening and closing over and over again. There was no mistaking it this time:

My child was saying "DAMMIT, FEED ME WOMAN!!!"

I'm so proud. :)

First Swim

Now that the temperatures here are over 100 degrees every day, we decided that it was time to take Bubba for his first dip in the pool. At our apartment complex there are three pools - two regular ones, and a small, 3 foot deep "baby" pool. We opted to use the latter since this one is the closest to our apartment.

We were all prepared - baby swim diaper, teeny swim trunks, hooded froggy towel.

He got in with dad first. He wasn't too sure what to make of this cold water! It was overcast by the time we got out there, but still pretty warm outside so I wasn't overly concerned. Also, it was starting to get dark, hence the dim photos.

He fussed a little right at first, but didn't cry at all. After a few minutes, he started to get used to the water and even splashed around with his hands for a bit. We took turns carrying him around and lying him on his back.

After about fifteen minutes his teeth started chattering and his lips got a slight bluish tinge to them, so we got out. Dad stayed in for a bit longer while Bubba and I hung out on the lounge chairs.

Check out those cute, pruney baby toes!

It went very well for a first pool outing, I think!

Say what?

(photo taken last month while waiting for the doctor)

When we go to playgroup, all the babies around his age that are babbling either say DADADADADA or MAMAMAMAMA. My child says his own name - BUBUBUBUBUH! LOL! So today, I had him sitting on the bed while I was doing my hair and he was just chattering away. I hear "BUH BUH BUH BUH BUH BUH BUH MA MA!" which of course, makes me immediately stop what I'm doing and to over to where he is.

"MA MA? Is that what you said? MA MA!" I exclaimed to him.

"MA MA!" he agreed with me.

Seriously? I could have DIED from the happy. Now, of course, I know it was probably just more baby babble, but still, to hear that come out in his cute little voice...

That just made my day. :)
