Something Finally Clicked

We've been working on this "eating rice cereal" business since the 18th of February. The first time we tried it, I mixed up a tablespoon of cereal with some breastmilk to make it a thin consistency, just like the pediatrician told me to do.

Um... yeah. I'd say most of that got washed down the disposal.

After that, I'd mix somewhere between half a teaspoon to a whole teaspoon up for feedings, but the result was always the same - he'd sort of eat a couple of spoonfuls (and I'm using the term "full" loosely here!) and the rest would go to waste. We had spoon practice, where I'd let him play with the clean spoon, or I'd pretend to feed him, and he'd open up for those. No sweat. It was just once you mixed the cereal in that he wanted nothing to do with it. I even tried a "bait and switch" sort of technique, where I'd give him the bottle for half a minute, then pull it out and while his mouth was still open , swoop in with the cereal. Then I'd pop the bottle back into place before he had a chance to spit it out! Poor kid, LOL!

I also kind of started to slack off with the whole mess. I started off with one feeding a day, but then I'd skip a day here and there, and then I sorta skipped four days in a row last week... oops! So, I was thinking I had to get back on the rice cereal wagon at that point. One of the moms at our meetup said all you had to do was hold the spoon next to the baby's mouth, and that if the baby wanted to eat, he'd open up. No airplanes, funny noises, faces, or switcharoo tactics required. So, last night, I mixed up the WHOLE tablespoon of cereal, got little man a bib, and we got to work.

And whaddaya know?

It worked! Not only did he finish his cereal for the first time ever, he seemed to actually LIKE it!

I still think it's gross though. Not looking forward to peas AT ALL.
